August is usually a quiet month on the gig front for me, however I do have a few things going on. The first being a talk on the Benny Goodman Small Groups at Peterborough U3A this coming Friday, 9th August.
This has been a fun subject to research. The BG combos are very close to my heart. I found a first cylinder recording from 1927 as well as some early pre- big band examples. I’ll be devoting quite a bit of time to the classic Krupa, Wilson Hampton line-ups as well as the sextets with Charlie Christian Christian etc.
Swaffham Jazz Club – Tuesday 13th August at 7:30PM – Stella Goodey’s Glocal Quintet with Lord Arsenal, trumpet & piano, Colin Bray, piano, Keith Donald, bass.
Stella is a fine vocalist who was influenced by Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and many others. This session will feature her interpretations of many of the jazz and blues standards. Stella was featured on the Rose records CD, ‘It’s Me O Lord’, my second album of hymns and spirituals.
The session is at the Swaffham Conservative Club, 23 London St, Swaffham PE37 7DD. Admission is £8, tickets from 01760 722 384 or 01366 328 730.
