Walkin' With The King - Saturday 30th November @ 7:00pm
A sensational New Orleans Spirituals, Hymns & Hot Gospel Charity Concert, comes to St Mary Le Tower as part of the 10th Christmas tree Festival in aid of Headway Suffolk , Music and upkeep at St Mary-le-Tower and the Mayor’s Charities: WASSUP & We Are Patrick.
Psalm 150 said “Praise God with the sound of the trumpet and the loud clashing cymbals". Britain’s Ace Drummin’ Man John Petters takes that literally when he brings his New Orleans All Stars to perform the highly acclaimed hot gospel show to St Mary’s.
The concert, promises a foot tapping, hand-clapping celebration of praise, New Orleans Style. Hymns, spirituals and hot gospel music will be played with a real Dixieland beat!
The show has audiences dancing in the aisles and enjoying such favourites as “Down By The Riverside”, and of course the evergreen “When The Saints Go Marchin’” In. Hymn sheets will be provided and audience participation positively encouraged.
Bandleader, John Petters, is a driving and exciting drummer in the New Orleans tradition and is famous for his flamboyant solos in the style of swing legend Gene Krupa.
The band features virtuoso clarinettist Duncan Batchelor - a unique stylist - and one of the most exciting sounds in jazz today.
Jon Graham a brilliant young trumpeter, will be on hand to add the flavour of Louis Armstrong to the proceedings.
BBC broadcaster, writer and tailgate trombonist, Mike Pointon completes the exciting frontline. Mike worked and recorded with many veteran original New Orleans Jazz legends in the ‘60s. He won the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Award for his book, ‘Goin’ Home’, the life story of trumpet icon Ken Colyer.
Bass ace, Keith Donald is totally self taught, and has performed with most of the top stars of British jazz.
Cambridge’s Mr Jazz, Tim Phillips will be laying down the harmony and rhythm on banjo.
